General Description:

The Ladies Improvement Association founded the Delray Beach Public Library in 1913. In 1938 the Delray Beach Public Library Association became a not-for-profit corporation to provide a public library in Delray Beach. Since 1950, our patrons have received library service through a successful public/private partnership between the City of Delray Beach and the Library Association. The City of Delray Beach has provided a large percentage of the annual operating budget and the Library Association has raised capital funds.

The Delray Beach Public Library exists to enrich the lives of the individuals of Delray Beach’s diverse communities by creating and sustaining superior public library services through responsive staff, dynamic collections, appropriate technology, effective programming, and access to global information. Our Vision is to become the best public library in Florida.

The Reference Librarian – Digital Services (The Librarian DS) – serves as the lead librarian responsible for developing, maintaining content and navigation of the Library’s website including program registration, news items, new page development and fundraising documents.  The Librarian DS organizes content and sends out the library’s digital newsletter(s).  Design knowledge and skill is vital to promote library activity on the website, newsletter, and other digital platforms. The Librarian DS develops and delivers computer instruction and classes for all ages with a proficiency in working with Microsoft, Apple, and Android operating systems. The Librarian DS works as part of the Public Library Services Team and works on, and in support of public service desks.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the supervision of the Head of Reference Services Department, the Librarian DS is the Lead Library Website Manager and Innovator.
  • The Librarian DS works as part of the Reference and Information Public Services Team and is cross trained on all public services desks.  
  • The Librarian DS develops and delivers computer instruction and classes for all ages with a proficiency in working with Microsoft, Apple, and Android operating systems.  
  • Serves on reference desk on regular schedule, providing reference service in person, on the phone, via email, and online.
  • Introduces and training colleagues on emerging technologies.
  • Collaborates with Lead Innovation and Instructional Librarian to further develop Technology, Training, Innovation Lab classes, equipment, and space use.
  • Performs continuous environmental scanning of innovative technology application in libraries and beyond is required.
  • Helps to maintain current technology and identify, pilot, and evaluate the success of new technological applications.
  • Participates on the Technology Team is expected where this individual presents innovative ways (and related plan with budget) to provide training opportunities focusing on technology.
  • Works on a rotating schedule that includes Saturdays, Sundays, and full weekends when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Computer Science and/or Computer programming certification required.
  • Minimum of two years of working in a library preferred.
  • Master’s in Library Science preferred.
  • Online portfolio or samples of digital projects showcasing previous work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent rapport, and cooperative and courteous relationships with supervisor, co-workers, officials, merchants, city representatives, partner organizations, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, deliver and assess technology training for children, teens, and adults.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in both Windows and Mac operating systems.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including planning, execution, and evaluation.
  • Experience using web development tools such as WordPress, Mailchimp, HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of creative productivity software applications, including Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro); 3D design programs (TinkerCAD, Blender, Fusion360); and digital audio workstations (Garageband, Audition, Pro Tools).
  • Experience with Python, Java, C#, or similar programming languages for teaching classes on application development or general-purpose coding.
  • Experience with SQL, MariaDB, PHP, or Perl preferred for future development of website and ILS.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                          

Ability to lift 25 pounds in the shifting and moving of library materials and equipment required. Ability to navigate stairs, kneel, bend, reach, stand for 1/2 hour, stretch and stoop in the maintenance of an orderly collection on the shelves required. Normal speech quality and normal hearing ability expected at level of 25 decibels through the speech frequency, aided or unaided, in order to efficiently serve the public.  Ability to drive a car to perform various duties outside library building and ability to attend out-of-town meetings via commercial transportation.
