As a Youth Services/Young Adult Librarian, you will have a positive impact on our community and help shape the future by providing programs and other library services to children and teens.

This position works primarily with teens and children but also provides services to adults, including readers’ advisory and reference. The South County Regional Library Youth Services team includes a Senior Librarian and a Youth Services Associate. The Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library team includes a Senior Librarian, a Youth Services Librarian, and a Youth Services Library Associate. The successful candidate enjoys working with teens and children, positively embraces public library service, and demonstrates flexibility and good judgment that reflects a commitment to teamwork and customer service. The South County Regional Library is a 32,000 sq. ft. facility that has been serving the residents of Estero and surrounding areas since 1996. Conveniently located just off Interstate 75, the South County Regional Library boasts highly attended youth programs, dedicated Friends of the Library support, and outstanding connections to its users. The library has an enthusiastic staff serving this rapidly growing community with a diverse population and is scheduled for an upgrade and redesign. The Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library is a 40,000 sq. ft. regional library located in Cape Coral, a fast-growing city in Lee County. The Youth Services department has spacious family seating, a separate story time room, a LEGO table, public Internet stations, early literacy and elementary school-aged learning stations, and an interactive multi-touch screenplay table for all ages. The library features an outside butterfly garden with bench seating and a trellis with flowering fines to attract butterflies and is a great place for families to enjoy nature.



  • Provide stellar customer service by assisting patrons of all ages using Library resources and services, including computers, electronic resources, reference, and readers’ advisory. 
  • Maintain a regular collection maintenance schedule and promotion of the children's and teens' collections through weeding, selection, and displays. 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in readers’ advisory to children and teens. 
  • May be assigned to participate in branch-specific and system-wide committees. 
  • Present tours and programs for school and community groups visiting the library. 
  • Provide technology training to staff and patrons 
  • May be in charge of the library for specific days or shifts. 
  • Explain and administer library policies and procedures 
  • Actively seek and participate in professional development opportunities and stay abreast of emerging technology and trends. 
  • Communicate and work effectively and tactfully with co-workers, sharing information and working cohesively as a team. 
  • May supervise student volunteers and/or paraprofessional personnel. 
  • Develop and maintain communication and contacts with nearby secondary schools and community organizations that serve children and teens. 
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate public library programs primarily for teens and children in accordance with the interest and demographics of the community. 
  • May be in charge of the department in the absence of the Senior Librarian 
  • Performing outreach and community engagement activities in collaboration with the Manager of Programming and Community Outreach.




  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate library school program accredited by the American Library Association or a closely related field such as Education or School Media. 
    • Graduate students enrolled in a Library Science program accredited by the American Library Association with the ability to obtain this degree within 6 months of hire will also be considered.
  • Requires one year of library or closely related experience. 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required.



  • Prefer a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate library school program accredited by the American Library Association or the ability to obtain this degree within 6 months of hire. 
  • Prefer experience with planning and presenting programs to children and teens.
  • Prefer experience and/or education related to children's and teens' literature and programming. 
  • Spanish speaking is a plus. 
  • Exceptional communication skills are preferred. 
  • Ability to deliver an exemplary customer experience is preferred. 
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team is preferred. 
  • Ability to learn and adopt new and emerging technologies is preferred. 
  • Ability to analyze the needs of the community and to plan, develop and conduct appropriate programs for targeted groups is preferred. 
  • Ability to engage community partners in the promotion of library programs is preferred.
  • The County may require employees to make either a temporary, or long-term, permanent transfer to another library location to accommodate the organization's business needs.
  • This position is 80 hours bi-weekly; hours and days will vary to include evenings, Saturdays, and some Sundays.
