About Our Job


This position provides customer service through contact and responses to county customers and citizens. As the direct point of contact for customers, the Library Assistant resolves routine questions or problems and refers more complex issues. In the team environment all employees participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contribute to decision making and evaluation of progress. Employees collaborate with co-workers to support the team process.


Job Description:

  • Plans and directs library  programming for adults, young adults, and children, in coordination with other library professionals at the library and throughout the library system
  • Analyzes and identifies service population needs, and develops plans to meet those needs.
  • Participates in presentation and development of technology training and information literacy programs for staff and patrons.
  • Participates in ad-hoc/one-on-one training of customers in use of library technology
  • Participates in the development of goals, objectives, for agency plan and performance evaluations.
  • Provides guidance for and facilitates the activities of work teams.
  • Provides opportunities for continuing professional development of self and others, especially in acquiring relevant understanding and skills.
  • General reference service in assisting customers by locating answers to questions, including Interlibrary Loan services and referral to agencies outside the library.
  • This may include adding a word or two to the previous template. The lines about makerspace technology, creation, programming is especially important.


Work Hours: 40 hours a week.

Library hours of operation:

  • Monday - Wednesday: 8am - 8pm

  • Thursday: 8am - 6pm

  • Friday - Sundays: 8am - 5pm


Work schedules may vary due to split shifts, rotations, on-call, emergencies, etc.

**Employee may be re-assigned to fill in at other Libraries within Sarasota County.


About You

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association 
  • Bachelor’s degree and enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain a MLS/MLIS within 6 months of hire.


Preferred Qualifications: One-year of experience in library environment.



Physical Demands:  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.



Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.

Pay: $42,868.80 - $50,000.00 based off direct Librarian experience
