The Public Services Librarian is responsible for the creation, marketing, and delivery of classes and events for adult patrons as the provision of reference services in the library. Maitland Public Library boasts a robust calendar of events and classes, including cooking demonstrations, health and wellness events, craft classes, and more. The Public Services Librarian must keep abreast of changes in the delivery of information services and trends in adult programming. The Public Services Librarian should be able to develop creative programming that takes advantage of the resources found in and around Maitland, amongst the patrons, and amongst the staff.
Note: Due to COVID-19, many of the Library's programs are online or hybrid. This trend is expected to ebb and flow, so candidates should be willing to explore this medium.
The Public Services Librarian reports to the Manager of Public Services and works closely with other staff on the development of classes and services for a wide audience and the use of Social Media in marketing library events. The successful candidate will have a high level of motivation and self-discipline, be comfortable working alone or in a team, and can balance their own initiative with the needs of the team. Due to the nature of this position, some night and weekend shifts are required.
About the Library: The Maitland Public Library is an historic gem with a small town feel to it. The Library was created in 1896 with the donation of 360 books by resident Clara Dommerich. First housed in a local teacher’s living room, the Library later moved to a storefront on Horatio Avenue, near the railroad tracks. The current library building on South Maitland Avenue was built in 1907, with additions made to it in 1959, 1972, and 1989.
The Library has a relatively small staff and a strong team environment. While employees are given freedom to explore creative ideas, no one is left alone in a silo. Staff take pride in their excellent customer service skills. Our programs, computers, and facility are open to all. We have a robust programming catalog and have come up with new and creative ways to serve patrons throughout the pandemic.
What we are looking for: Someone who enjoys working with others in a collaborative environment. A person comfortable with public speaking, who can think outside the box and come up with new ideas for programming. If this sounds like you, we look forward to hearing from you.
