Summary

 

The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library at Barry University is seeking an Associate Director of Technical Services. This management position oversees all Technical Services Department operations including staff management, acquisitions budgeting, purchasing, invoicing cataloging and classifying of print and electronic library materials.

Essential Functions

 

Maintains integrity of all ILS cataloging, acquisitions and serials modules and systems by:

  • Managing all aspects of catalog, acquisitions, and serial database maintenance for the Main Library.

  • Overseeing original cataloging efforts.

  • Planning and implementing improvements and updates to ILS system modules.

  • Ensuring database content is accurate.

  • Developing and maintaining bibliographic data transfer tools to support exterior data vendors.

 

Ensure smooth workflow of Technical Service Department by:

  • Setting goals and priorities for the area.

  • Managing and coordinating the activities of staff and functions of cataloging, acquisitions and serials departments.

  • Writing and conducting annual staff performance appraisals.

  • Preparing and maintaining regular Technical Services reports, budgets and statistical data.

  • Developing, expending and tracking all school/department book and serial budgets.

  • Developing, documenting and monitoring Technical Services Department’s policies and procedures.

 

Serves the Library and Division by:

  • Working closely with the Law Library and other departments on all shared ILS and database projects.

  • Managing relations with external ILS and information resources vendors.

 

Serves the University by:

  • Serving on University committees, councils, and task forces.

  • Reporting to colleagues on committee activities.

  • Participating and offering activities and services that support the mission of the Library and the University.

  • Representing the University on external professional organizations.

 

Ensures professional growth by:

  • Actively participating in continuing educational training.

  • Attending/presenting appropriate programs, conferences, professional meetings, classes, etc.

  • Ensuring all Technical Services staff are provided appropriate professional development and training opportunities.

  • This position receives work assignments primarily from the supervisor/manager.

  • Supervises work of others, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards.  Is responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff.  Plans organizational structure and position content.


Education:

Qualifications/Requirements

 

  • Master's degree in Librarianship required.

  • 3-5 years of work-related experience is required.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and ability to use in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations.

  • Analysis of Library systems, online modules in technical services area.

  • Policies and procedures of department. Knowledgeable of HR issues.

  • Thorough knowledge of Integrated Library System’s functionality.

  • Ability to use various types of equipment (computer, telephones, printers, scanners, copiers and production software.)

  • Supports life-long learning, growth, and development of our patrons.

 

  • Respects diversity.

  • Servicing Barry University community.

  • Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department. Position may contribute to important strategy, operational and business decisions that affect the department.

  • Results are defined; incumbent sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results with few or no guidelines to follow, although precedents may exist; supervisor/manager provides broad guidance and overall direction.
