Florida State University Libraries seeks a highly collaborative and service-minded individual as the Social Science Data & Research Librarian. This position plays a key role in advancing research and scholarship at FSU by (1) providing specialized library instruction, outreach, and research support to faculty and students in the social sciences, and (2) providing leadership in the discovery and use of research data in the social sciences. 

This position will work collaboratively with other data-related positions to provide support in locating, analyzing, and using data. As part of a collaborative team, this position will serve as a resource to other social science subject librarians. No professional can specialize in everything. This non-tenured faculty position is part of a team of subject librarians in the Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities Department in the Research and Learning Services Division of the FSU Libraries. This position is also part of the Social Science Librarians Working Group and the Data Services Team.


  • Serve as primary liaison to select social science departments, preferably Sociology, Demography, and Economics; focus on course-integrated instruction, skill-building workshops, research consultations, outreach, and collection development
  • Create LibGuides, web pages, or other materials to provide information about research resources and data sources
  • Provide instruction, consult, and research support for students and faculty working with data sources, data software, and data analysis common to social sciences research
  • Work collaboratively with the STEM Data & Research librarian, as well as the Technology and Digital Scholarship staff to develop a complementary suite of data services that include data collection, data literacy training, data analysis, and visualization
  • Work collaboratively with the Social Science Librarians Working Group to provide both research and data support across the social sciences
  • Represent FSU as the designated representative for ICPSR

  • Graduate degree in social sciences and/or ALA accredited program, or other appropriate degree
  • Ability to assess curricular and research needs in social science disciplines, select materials and build library and data services to meet those needs
  • Demonstrated interest in data services for the social sciences and a commitment to learn new skills
  • Knowledge of scholarly research trends and research methods in the social sciences
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement effective programs, complex projects, and services
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work flexibly and effectively in groups with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Experience with tools for social sciences data analysis, including but not limited to SPSS, Stata, SAS, R, or NVivo 
  • Experience with data management plans to support public access mandates and grant requirements
