Description:

The Middle Grade and Young Adult Diverse BookFinder (DBF) Project Manager is a time- limited TEAMS position funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant titled “Middle Grade and Young Adult Books with Black, Indigenous People, and People of Color: Where are they?” (LG-250070-OLS-21). Reporting to the grant’s Principal Investigator, and in close collaboration with Bates College and California State University, Fresno - the Project Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination and management of the DBF project. This includes providing administrative support for the recruitment and work of 120 volunteers, and working closely with the grant project team, Advisory Council, Community of Practice, web consultants, users and multiple stakeholders at institutions and organizations throughout the country. The Project Manager will also provide administrative support for the Community of Practice volunteers who will read and code middle grade and young adult books featuring Black, Indigenous People, and People of Color (BIPOC) characters. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Middle Grade and Young Adult Diverse BookFinder will be an online, searchable database designed to facilitate the discoverability and exploration of multicultural middle grade & young adult (MG/YA) books. The project aims to diversify and balance bookshelves everywhere, so that all children can find themselves reflected and celebrated in libraries, schools, and homes across the nation. The two primary goals of this project are to: 1) create a database that identifies not just who are included in MG/YA books featuring BIPOC characters, but how these characters are represented, and 2) to create a freely available tool that can easily be used by librarians to analyze the diversity of their own MG/YA collections This partnership builds on the picture book Diverse BookFinder, an organization that has cataloged and analyzed thousands of trade picture books featuring BIPOC characters published or distributed in the U.S. since 2002. The DBF project team consists of librarians and researchers at the University of Florida, Bates College, and California State University, Fresno as well as an Advisory Council comprised of four working groups: 1) Community of Practice, 2) Collection Development, 3) Metadata, and 4) Editing/Marketing. Essential functions of this position are: 
 
Project Management
·         Manages project workflow and day-to-day activities of the grant
·         Assists with monitoring grant budget
·         Collaborates with the Principal Investigator to deliver progress reports on a specified schedule
·         Maintains a contact list of grant team members and volunteers
·         Responds to public, professional, and scholarly inquiries
 
Community of Practice Volunteer Management
·         Leads in recruitment of up to 120 part-time Community of Practice volunteers from around the country
·         Communicates regularly with volunteers via email, phone, or other communication methods
·         Helps develop training materials such as slides, handouts, or videos
·         Conducts synchronous and asynchronous training in conjunction with the DBF team
·         Contributes to the creation of a code book for middle grade and young adult books
 
Marketing and Editorial
·         Develops and sends out a monthly newsletter to various listservs
·         Coordinates regular social media posts
·         Communicates with additional outlets as necessary
·         Contributes to project dissemination through presentations, webinars, and workshops
 
Website
·         Oversees the creation and maintenance of the Community of Practice website
·         Updates the DBF website
 
Other Duties as Assigned
·         Participates in special projects as assigned.
·         Participates in professional development opportunities as needed.
·         Performs other duties as assigned.


Education:

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and four years of related library experience; or a Master’s degree and two years of related library experience; or any equivalent of experience and/or education.
 
 
Preferred:
·         Evidence of successful project management experience
·         Experience supporting the work of volunteers
·         Experience developing and delivering online training
·         Experience with website beta testing
·         Experience with developing and posting social media content
·         Background or experience with multicultural literature for children and young adults
·         Commitment to contributing to a respectful and caring community for all, including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientation, and perspectives
·         Strong oral and written communication skills
·         Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to accomplish goals
·         Flexibility and ability to adapt and work in a rapidly changing academic environment
·         Basic computer skills and experience with WordPress, Microsoft suite, and Outlook
