Position Details
The Macdonald-Kelce Library at The University of Tampa (UT) has a position available for a Full-Time Library Cataloging Assistant in the Technical Services Department. Primary responsibilities include verifying bibliographic information, maintaining accurate holdings, creating item-level information, processing materials to shelf-ready status, weeding items from collection, and other cataloging projects. This position reports to the Cataloging and Acquisitions Librarian.
Responsibilities
1. Maintains accurate library holdings in the local system and national bibliographic utilities like OCLC.
2. Enhances bibliographic records in the library management system.
3. Verifies LC call numbers, subject headings, and other metadata.
4. Inputs item level information and assigns barcodes.
5. Processes all materials for circulation in a manner consistent with the existing collection, including the application of pockets, stamps, barcodes, and spine labels.
6. Applies basic reinforcements and performs minor repairs and other modifications to promote durability and shelf readiness.
7. Responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies needed for the physical processing of materials.
8. Participates in quality improvement projects which include but are not limited to repairing, relocating, relabeling, and withdrawing obsolete records and materials.
9. Handles, shelves, and shifts materials throughout the library that may be covered with dust.
10. Supervises student workers.
11. Works as a member of the technical services department team and the library staff to ensure quality service to the UT community.
12. Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
Work Schedule
Hours during academic year: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., 7.5 hours per day
Summer hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., 9 hours per day
Qualifications
1. Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. One (1) year experience with a library automation system such as Alma.
3. Knowledge of OCLC Connexion, basic cataloging rules and principles, MARC formats, and LC subjects and classification system.
4. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and other general office programs and equipment.
5. Ability to pay attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency despite the tedious and repetitive nature of tasks.
6. Ability to exercise good judgment in solving problems.
7. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
8. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
9. Ability to communicate clearly and congenially with coworkers at all levels.
10. Ability to perform needed tasks that involve extended periods of sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, walking, pushing (book carts may weigh up to 75 pounds), pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
11. Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday and Microsoft Office.
12. Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.
