GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of routine services for library patrons at the Adult Circulation desk.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Service Specialist.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs routine maintenance on books and other materials, such as mending covers, cleaning books and materials,

 

Answers telephone calls and provides information or otherwise assists or refers patrons as appropriate.

 

Assists in checking library materials in and out; processes overdue charges, fines and fees and places holds on requested materials for customers

 

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, running errands, picking up supplies, setting up tables and chairs for classes, etc.

 

Must possess knowledge of popular authors and current titles in order to provide excellent customer service and reader’s advisory services for library customers.  Must be familiar with databases or reader’s advisory tools to best assist customers.

 

Follows all library policies as established by the Lake Wales Library Board.

 

Assists in maintaining library collection and facilities by vacuuming and dusting; straightening books, chairs, shelves, papers and magazines; changing calendars; and emptying waste containers and book drops.

 

Participation in continuing education classes in the fields of customer service, reader’s advisory, computer databases and downloadable formats is highly recommended when available to employee.

 

Must be able to collect and properly handle money, compute fees owed and properly secure money at the conclusion of a library work day.

 

Shelves library’s audio-visual materials.  Maintains order in this section.

 

Must have working knowledge of the Polk County Library Cooperative member network, services, and staff.

Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as required.

Education/Qualifications:

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

 

(A) High school diploma or GED, supplemented by two years of post-secondary education or training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, or

(B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

(A) Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs;  knowledge of library circulation or processing techniques; knowledge of library classification systems; knowledge of basic office procedures including computers in a Windows environment;

(B) Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment.

(C) Ability to accurately maintain library filing systems; Ability to orally communicate effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees, supervisors, and the general public.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Florida driver's license.  Required to complete a minimum of 15 CEUs annually in library services, customer service or related fields.

Library computer system; calculator; copier/printer; phone system.
