Performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in providing outreach materials by mail services to library patrons throughout Polk County.


Works under the supervision of the Books by Mail Supervisor & the Library Director.




Answers telephone calls and email correspondence to provide information pertaining to the Books by Mail services, or refers patrons as appropriate.
Assists patrons with title selection and reader’s advisory services via telephone or email. In order to better serve the needs of these patrons, keeps records of homebound patron’s reading preferences and interests.
Prepares daily mailings including sorting, packing, weighing and determining correct postage rates, meeting daily deadlines with minimal errors.
Must possess knowledge of different genres of books, films, audio visual and other popular formats. Knowledge of popular authors and current titles is required to provide excellent customer service and reader’s advisory services.
Assist in checking books by mail library materials out and placing holds on requested materials. Addresses patron’s concerns when materials are lost, claimed returned or other issues.
Follows Books by Mail (BMail) policy as established by the Polk County Library Cooperative.
• Participates in outreach and marketing opportunities within Polk County to promote BMail
• Participation in continuing education classes in the fields of customer service, reader’s
advisory, outreach services, marketing, and computer databases is highly recommended.
• Practices safety in the work place.
• Assists in maintaining the library facilities as needed.



Assists other Books by Mail staff in the performance of their duties as required.

Education and Experience:
(A) High school diploma or GED, supplemented by two years of post-secondary education or
training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, or
(B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs;
knowledge of library circulation or processing techniques; knowledge of library
classification systems; knowledge of office procedures including computers in a windows
• Skilled in the operation of office tools and equipment;
• Ability to accurately maintain filing systems;
• Ability to orally communicate effectively;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees,
supervisors, and the general public.
Valid Florida driver's license. Required to complete a minimum of 20 CEUs annually in library
services, customer service or related fields.

Library computer system; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; automobile; postage machine
and scales.
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities with/without
reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to communicate effectively.
• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation to enable the employee to review a wide
variety of materials.
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the
employee to operate a personal computer, telephone, and related equipment.
• Physical Demands: Job involves considerable amount of movement and activity. Work
routinely involves lifting or handling material weighing up to 25 lbs., pushing book carts
weighing up to 100 lbs., and heavy use of the computer.
• Emotional Demands: Some stress related to ensuring accuracy of work. Some pressure
related to sustained periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.
• Social Environnent: Relatively quiet environment.
• Physical Environment: Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building
temperature related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable period of heat or cold.
Some periods of elevated noise levels.
