A highly responsible administrative and professional position requiring technical library skills and a desire to offer great customer service. Work involves strategic leadership of library services, collections, and staff. The Library Director works independently, under the direction of the City Manager, according to prescribed procedures and plans for long-range library growth. Administers plans, organizes, and coordinates all activities of the City Library.
Analyzes and authorizes acquisition of books, periodicals and other materials.
Prepares and implements, manages the library annual budget.
Oversees technical training and support for automated library systems.
Authorizes employee leave, verifies and approves department time records and evaluates staff performance. Supervises the work of library employees and volunteers engaged in professional and paraprofessional and clerical work, ensuring adherence to established regulations, policies and procedures.
Conducts public relations programs to increase public awareness and support of library programs and services.
Ensures proper sanctions, permits and approvals are obtained as required for activities and special city events.
Selects equipment and furnishings in order to maintain efficient usage of public and staff areas.
Compiles and prepares documentation to qualify and receive state and federal assistance,. Research and secure grants, other than State Aid; implements and manages federal, state and other sources of funding.
Serves on library cooperative director’s council.
Participates with Friends Guild in fund-raising and program enhancement.Keeps abreast of recent developments & trends in library profession by reading professional literature and participating in professional organizations; may attend state/regional library association meetings and conferences.
Develops instructional programs for public computer training.
Develops and executes progressive development of the library; strategies and programs to develop and maintain positive image and relations between
representatives, partners, and residents.
Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited
program supplemented by three to five years of progressively responsible public library
work with extensive supervisory experience. Library cooperative experience preferred.
