NATURE OF WORK:

**INCLUDES EVENING AND WEEKEND SHIFTS**
Selects and deselects adult fiction materials in a variety of formats to ensure a balanced collection in line with the Library Collection Development and Management Policy and Long Range Plan. Provides reference and instructional services for the public. Hours include nights and weekends.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Selects adult fiction materials in a variety of formats for multiple library locations. Reviews and evaluates new and donated materials for addition to the collection using relevant review sources. Ensures collection items meet criteria set forth in the Library Collection Development and Management Policy.
  • Works closely with branch managers, reviews collection usage reports, and accepts staff and patron suggestions to ensure selection decisions meet the needs of each community.
  • Conducts regular weeding activities and reports on progress. Uses ILS reports, staff and patron feedback, the Library Collection Development and Management Policy and other resources to make deselection decisions.
  • Participates in product demos and trials and speaks with vendors to learn about new materials, formats and services.
  • Provides reference and instructional services for the public using print and non-print resources; assists patrons in locating and obtaining materials and information.
  • Provides instruction and actively participates in the development and design of computer classes and classes on the use of the library and its resources.
  • Participates in the preparation of budgets for collection development and maintenance.
  • Explains and assists in use of resources such as book catalogs or indexes to locate information. Describes or demonstrates procedures for navigating the public access catalog, electronic resources and the Internet.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Promotes goodwill through publicity efforts such as speeches, outreach events, tours and programs. Represents library during community projects at social and business gatherings.
  • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials in order to promote library collections.
  • Compiles and updates bibliographies and library user guides.
  • Provides training for patrons and staff on the use of the library catalog and other collection discovery resources. Makes recommendations for improvement of the library catalog.
  • Maintains and increases skills while keeping abreast of current developments in the library field through continuing education, professional reading, and workshops and conferences.
  • Makes recommendations for the inclusion of new collections and formats that will best meet patron needs.
  • May conduct virtual reference services.
  • May assist with Interlibrary Loan activities.
  • Requires evening and weekend shifts.
  • Regular reliable full time attendance as scheduled

Education:
  • Master's degree (M. S.) in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Two years of experience selecting materials for a public library collection; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook is essential.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
  • Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.
