Description:

The academic librarian is responsible for the acquisition, organization, management, and distribution of library resources, and ensuring that library provisions meet the needs of all of its users. This is a people-focused role, requiring individuals to manage learning resources and duties include selecting, developing, cataloging and classifying library resources, answering readers’ inquiries, using library systems and specialist computer applications, supervision of student workers, and other staff as assigned, liaising with departmental academic faculty, external organizations and suppliers, ensuring that library services meet the needs of particular groups of users, managing budgets and resources, and assisting library users with computer equipment, conducting literature searches, and promoting the library’s resources to users.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs cataloging in all formats using standards, serials processing, technical processing, and database maintenance

  1. Supervises library assistants and student workers

  1. Acquiring library materials, regardless of format (including subscriptions) by purchase and donation; includes receiving purchases.  Identifies and selects materials to be added to the library collection according to the library’s collection development policies.  Handles receipt, disposal and acknowledgement of gift materials for the library collection

  1. Maintains library materials budget records and appropriate statistics

  1. Provide leadership in the organization, processing and maintenance of archives and selected other special collections

  1. Other duties as assigned as appropriate to responsibilities and librarianship in general, including but not limited to running reports, staffing the Circulation desk

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college and a Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited school are required.

EXPERIENCE: At least three years of technical services experience, preferably in an academic library.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated strengths in leadership, organization, and communication. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to work flexible hours; may require evenings and weekends. Knowledge of computer software.  Proven ability to manage multiple projects and measure results.

Microsoft Office software experience should include Word and Excel.

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Depending on the assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 - 50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to electronics work. May need to visit other campus buildings, and travel for continuing education or business as assigned.
