Description:

 

Performs a variety of complex technical and administrative tasks requiring considerable independent judgment and in-depth knowledge related to the management of a large library branch serving an urban area of the County.  The person in this job classification manages a library facility of at least 15,000 sq. ft. and supervises at least 12 employees including a professional staff.

 

  • Directs operations of library branch by assisting in developing short-range and long-range plans, determining internal policies and procedures, and coordinating the development of goals and objectives for the unit.
  • Manages and leads in the operation of a branch library.
  • Maintains good public relations with the neighborhood, community, or target populations served by the unit.
  • Trains and makes assignments to subordinates, evaluates their performance, and recommends personnel actions.
  • Monitors unit operations and customer service, ensures any necessary corrections are made, and implements staff changes to improve services.
  • Assists in budget preparation and maintenance by forecasting department or branch library requirements and monitoring expenditures.
  • Oversees branch physical plant (cleanliness, safety, security, use); reports problems to the Director and Maintenance Department.
  • Attends meetings, continuing education programs and conferences to keep informed of current trends, issues, and methods related to the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Coordinates, plans, and promotes various library activities.
  • Assists in selecting materials for the branch collection.
  • Serves as a member of the Library Department’s Management Team.

 


Education:

 

Requires a M.S.L.S. degree from an ALA accredited school and at least four years of management experience in a public library; or any equivalent acceptable combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Requires a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

 

Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, techniques, and procedures; ability to lead, plan, and supervise the work of others; ability to use office productivity software and library systems software; tact and courtesy; ability to work in a team environment; ability to speak effectively in public; good professional judgment.
